ORNAMENTO NELLO SPAZIO  6     ELICA

Installazione, essiccatoio di tabacco, materiali:  segatura, polvere di marmo, 6 x 6 m

Lo spazio dell’essiccatoio è un cubo turriforme (12 x 12 x 12 metri) delimitato, in alto, da un soffitto a travi, nel quale si aprono delle fessure. L’installazione è posizionata sul pavimento di terra battuta. Si tratta di un motivo a strisce costituito da righe bianche (polvere di marmo) e marrone chiaro (segatura) disposte a croce. Alla base del pilastro centrale, che si erge come un asse verticale, la croce si allunga sul pavimento per 6 metri.

L’installazione si ispira al processo di essiccazione e al suo dinamismo. Durante il processo di essiccazione, sotto alle foglie di tabacco che pendono dalle travi, appese alle corde, si dà fuoco alla segatura che, bruciando, non produce fiamme, ma fumo. Ciò avviene anche in questa installazione. Le finestre dell’essiccatoio sono disposte in modo tale che la corrente d’aria ascendente fa compiere al fumo una rotazione elicoidale. La segatura bruciata, alternata alla polvere di marmo,  resta a formare un ornamento bianco e nero a forma di croce.

Installation, Pilastro Artfarm, Tobacco drying room

Sawdust, marble dust, 6×6m

Capped by an open construction of beams, the space is reminescent of a tower chamber. The installation on the packed dirt floor repeats this structure, interpreting it as a pattern of stripes in white (marble dust) and light brown (sawdust). The surface is reduced to a cross, with the central pillar representing its point of juncture. In relation to the ledges in two of the opposing walls,which are aligned with the pillar, the cross is set on the floor in a minimal deviation from this existing axis, giving rise to an impression of dynamism through the slight rotation out of the right angle.

During the drying process, sawdust is ignited under the tobacco leaves hanging from the beams, whereby the sawdust smokes but does not really catch fire. This procedure was repeated in the installation. The chamber’s windows are set in such a way as to produce a draft causing the smoke to spiral. The burned sawdust left behind a cross ornament in black and white.
